Abt suicide....
Suicide is the act of wilfully ending one's own life; it is sometimes a noun for one who has committed or attempted the act.
Suicide is viewed in varying ways among the cultures, religions, legal and social systems of the world. It is considered a sin or immoral act in many religions, and a crime in some jurisdictions. In Singapore’s case, it is under Section 309 Chapter 224 of the Penal code. On the other hand, some cultures have viewed it as an honorable way to exit a certain shameful or hopeless situations like being rape or bring great dishounor to the family.
There are many reasons why a person may attempt suicide. It could be due to stress, depression, relationship and family problems. In my shoebox exhibition, I have chosen five artifacts to project the theme “suicide”. The five artefacts are a syringe, photograph of a happy couple, lighter, knife and pills.
I see suicide as a way of ending pain, usually due emotional feelings. Sometimes when things hurt so terribly, people may tend to be suicidal, hoping to die so that they will not have to face the emotional pain. To me, suicide is like a form of escape from reality and pain.
More often than not, a person may just want to inflict physical pain onto themselves so as to direct the emotional pain away. They believe that by experiencing physical pain, it may take away their emotional pain for the moment.
In some cases, the person with the intention of suicide may slit his or her wrist and open the veins, leading to excessive bleeding. This is why I have chosen the knife as one of the artefacts
Speaking of escaping reality, this is the reason why many people turn to drugs. Drugs like ecstasy, ganja or even heroin. These drugs can bring one’s emotions to a very high level and make them feel light headed and free. They are often lost in their own world after taking drugs. Most of the time, they can’t comprehend what is happening around them, although they could see things happening around them. They are often slurred in speech and have blood shot eyes.
An overdose of any kind of drugs is very dangerous. It may also lead to death when taken in large amounts as it could lead to hypertension and dehydration. Thus one of my artifacts, pills are added into the shoebox exhibition. Sometimes, a person who wants to end his or her life may take very large amounts of medicine and goes to sleep whilst waiting for death. The person might even choose to take the drug directly into the blood stream which speeds up the process of the drug thus I chose a syringe as another artefact, as it is the only instrument used to inject the medicine into the blood stream.
Another way of suicide is through self-immolation, which is burning oneself. This explains for the use of a lighter in my exhibition. Self-immolation is often practiced as a form of protest against a government or political party. It is a very painful way of suicide and also very noticeable in public places, hence making it a very effective way to gain publicity and attention. Some sort of catalyst like gasoline is often used to make the process quicker. One example of a famous person who has chosen this way to die is Romas Kalanta, in protest against the Soviet Union occupying his homeland Lithuania.
Broken relationships are usually the main reason leading to suicide. Often, when one’s beloved dies or leaves, it brings a very great impact to the person. The person may suddenly feel s sense of lost and may want to end his or her life because the emotional pain is too much to bear. I have chosen a photograph of a happy couple which is burnt at the edges and in the center to represent that the relationship of the happy couple is broken.
I have chosen a dark red colour for the whole shoebox to give a very dark and gloomy feeling, indicating loneliness and fear. Usually, before attempting suicide, a person has this sense of loneliness and fear within his or herself. People who are in depression find it difficult to express how they feel and they are often not willing to open up and tell their problems to someone. Thus if it is not treated early, they could be suicidal.
But on a whole issue, I would like to conclude that suicide might seem like an excellent option to be out of the pain, but it would lead a greater pain to our loves one and who knows if the person decided to die, the trouble they are suffering might just pass on to another love ones
